Some Useful Grammar Terms
Why do you want to know this?
Knowing the terms we use to refer to the different parts of a language help us understand their function. When we are expanding our language skills it is good to know what everything is called so we can learn about each part more efficiently!
1. ¿Qué es una oración?
A sentence is made up of a word or a group of words that convey a complete thought and includes at least a verb and a subject. Ex: El perro corre.
2. ¿Qué es un sustantivo?
Nouns are words that refer to people, animals, things and concepts. Ex: Juan, amigo, perro, lámpara, libertad.
3. ¿Qué es un artículo?
Articles are the short words that go before a noun and determine if it is specific (definite) or unspecific (indefinite). Ex: El perro, un perro, los perros, unos perros
5. ¿Qué es un adjetivo?
Adjectives are words that describe or modify nouns. Ex: Perro gordo, perro lindo, perro loco, perro grande.
6. ¿Qué es un verbo?
Verbs are words that convey actions. Ex: El perro corre, El perro saltó. El perro dormía.
6. ¿Qué es “conjugar”un verbo?
We conjugate verbs when we change the form of the same verb to convey who is doing the action and when the action happened. Ex: El perro corre (presente). El perro corrió (pasado). El perro correrá (futuro)
7. ¿Qué es un adverbio?
Adverbs are words that describe (modify) or provide additional information about a verb (El perro corre lentamente), an adjective (el perro es muy gordo), or another adverb (El perro corre muy lentamente). Other sample adverbs: siempre, aquí, maravillosamente.
8. ¿Qué es una preposición?
Prepositions are words that convey a sense of position (spatial or conceptual) Ex: El perro corre sobre la mesa, bajo la mesa, hacia la mesa, en la mesa.
9. ¿Qué es un pronombre?
Pronouns are words that take the place of a noun. Ex: El perro corre hacia la niña = Él corre hacia ella.
10. ¿Qué es una conjunción?
Conjunctions are words that connect two other words or phrases. Examples: El perro y el gato son lindos pero locos. Siempre corren o destruyen algo.
