Switching between “Y” and “E” makes things sound better, just like when we say “an apple” instead of “a apple”!
The two versions of “and”
The word “and” in Spanish has two versions: “y” and “e.” We should always use “y” unless the next word that follows starts with that sound, then we have to change it to an “e,” for example:
Mis mejores amigos son Pedro y María.
Mis mejores amigos son Pedro e Ignacio
This has to be done even if the next word starts with an “H,” for example:
Mis mejores amigos son Juan e Hilda.
Ojo: When the sound that follows the conjunction is a diphthong (ex: ia, ie, io) we keep the “Y,” for example:
Por favor dame agua y hielo.
